When you submit a DevEx request and Roblox approves it, you can create an account, select a payment method, and submit your tax forms on the DevEx Portal. The DevEx Portal is run by Tipalti, a third-party payment processor that Roblox partners with to process DevEx payments.
The following information on payment methods and tax forms is for informational purposes only. It is not intended as tax advice nor as a substitute for obtaining accounting, tax, or financial advice from a professional tax planner or financial planner, and may not be used to support tax positions.
Create an account
When you submit a DevEx request for the first time and Roblox approves your request, you will receive an email from no-reply@roblox.com inviting you to create a Tipalti account on the DevEx Portal. You must select your payment method and tax form within one week of receiving the registration link.
It's important that you enter your payment method, tax form, and all of your personal information accurately when you create your account on the DevEx Portal, and that you keep that information up to date at all times. This information helps Roblox process your payment, and any inaccuracies in your information can impact your payments.
Select payment method
Tipalti allows you to receive your DevEx payouts through a range of payment methods, such as PayPal, ACH, eCheck, and wire transfers. The payment methods that are available to you depend on where you live. For a full list of country-specific payout methods, see Tipalti's official Payment methods coverage documentation.
When Tipalti processes your payment, there is a processing time for the payment to land in your bank account that varies according to your payment method and the country that the money is being sent to. The following chart provides estimates for processing times according to a sample of common payment methods:
| Payment method | Processing time |
|---|---|
| ACH | 3 to 5 business days |
| eCheck | 3 to 5 business days |
| PayPal | 2 to 3 business days |
| Wire transfer | 1 to 5 business days |
| Check | 7 to 14 business days |
Note that Tipalti charges a transaction fee that is deducted from your DevEx payout, and the fees differ according to your payment method. In addition, if you want to convert your payout to your local currency, a foreign exchange fee of 1.9% to 3% will apply. Tipalti charges these transaction and foreign exchange fees to process your payouts.
To select a payment method and view related transaction fees:
- In the DevEx Portal, navigate to the Payment Details page.
- Select a new payment method and currency.
- Save your changes.
Submit a tax form
Tax reporting requirements vary according to whether you are a U.S. person or non-U.S. person. According to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), for U.S. federal tax purposes, a U.S. person includes, but is not limited to:
- An individual who is a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident alien.
- A partnership, corporation, company, or association created or organized in the U.S. or under the laws of the U.S.
- Any estate (other than a foreign estate).
- A domestic trust (as defined in Treasury Regulations Section 301.7701-7).
For more information on the process to submit a tax form for a U.S. or non-U.S. person, see the following subsections.
For a U.S. person
All U.S. persons who participate in the DevEx program are required to provide all tax information required to complete an IRS W-9 tax form when they create their account on the DevEx Portal. Roblox will submit your tax information to the IRS to validate your tax ID information. If U.S. tax information does not exactly match IRS records, a Roblox DevEx agent will contact you from support-en@roblox.com to get further information through email.
If your cash earnings for the prior tax year are greater than $2,000, Roblox will report your cash earnings to the IRS on IRS Form 1099-NEC. Roblox generally issues these forms on or before January 31 of each year.
All of the aforementioned tax forms are emailed to the email account on the DevEx Portal, and mailed to the address provided on your W-9 tax form. In addition, you will receive an email from noreply@efilemagic.com with instructions on how to acquire a digital copy of your tax forms. The link provided in the email expires after one year.
For a non-U.S. person
All non-U.S. persons who participate in the DevEx program are required to provide all tax information required to complete an IRS W-8 tax form when they create an account on the DevEx Portal. By signing the IRS W-8 tax form, you are certifying that you are not a U.S. person.
Non-U.S. persons generally will not receive an annual tax form from Roblox.
